Leicestershire's craggy north east (well, craggy by East Midlands standards) is the wildest part of what's generally a gentle county. Outside of Coalville towers (ahem) Bardon Hill, the eroded remains of a volcano. I was quite looking forward to topping it, given the general flatlands around giving an expectation of decent views.

Unfortunately the day I was in Leicestershire was dour, cloudy and rainy. I had parked on an A road which led to a pretty uncomfortable start down the busy, non-pavemented road to the starting point, after which I wound through some wooded tracks and up the hill. As I reached the trig point the much-lauded views were of a massive quarry and a sea of warehouses; apparently you can see from the Malverns to Lincoln Cathedral on a good day. This was not a good day. It started to tip down as I clung to the summit, and was grateful for my waterproofs as I sloshed back to the car.
